With choreography that ranks among the most demanding in ballet, and the very challenging Rose Adagio danced by Aurora, The Sleeping Beauty is unmissable for any true ballet fan.

June 1 - June 9

American Ballet Theatre presents World Premiere production of timeless fairy tale at the Met!

The Sleeping Beauty, originally conceived by Marius Petipa and scored by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky for the Maryinsky Theatre in 1890, is given an all-new staging by American Ballet Theatre Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie, famed Ballerina Gelsey Kirkland and director/dramaturg Michael Chernov.

Along with beautifully detailed costumes and gorgeous sets by a Tony Award®-winning team, ABT’s world-class dancers bring to life the timeless fairy tale of the beautiful enchanted princess and the handsome prince whose kiss arouses her from more than a century of sleep.

The story of The Sleeping Beauty may be simple, but its choreography is some of the most demanding in ballet, and the role of Aurora is particularly challenging. In the famous Rose Adagio, for example, Aurora greets each of her suitors en pointe in attitude and then must hold an extended balance with her arms gracefully above her head until the next one approaches. It takes exceptional control and strength, not to mention rock-solid nerves.

In addition to the extraordinary physical and technical demands of the dancing, the title role requires the ballerina to dramatically embody the special gifts bestowed upon her by the Fairies at her Christening as well as journey toward love and enlightenment realized at the end of the ballet. For many ballerinas, Aurora is the ultimate character to portray, and now you have the opportunity to see ABT’s roster of world-famous ballerinas bring their own unique interpretations to this role.
